The £168.6 billion construction industry will need to attract over 250,000 new workers to meet UK construction output by 2028.

With operations spanning roads and job sites, managing mixed fleets of vehicles and equipment is no simple feat. To keep up, construction companies are turning to technology to enhance security, maximise existing investments, and improve efficiency. Today’s most innovative tools deter theft with discreet equipment tracking, make any site camera smart with AI technology, and help prevent accidents with real-time, in-cab coaching.

Samsara helps construction companies find success with technology that sets the standard for vehicle and asset management:

  • Reduce accidents on the road and at the job site by coaching workers with safe driving habits and exonerating drivers from not-at-fault accidents.

  • Increase asset visibility and reliability by improving maintenance reporting and equipment tracking.

  • Cut fuel costs by encouraging efficient driving habits and eliminating unnecessary idling.

Read on to learn why thousands of construction organisations choose Samsara to improve their operations.

Why do construction companies use Samsara?

From asset tracking to road and job site safety to fuel management, here’s how organisations are using Samsara to consolidate their operations and impact their bottom line:

AI Dash Cams and vehicle telematics enable preventative safety and reduce collisions: Fox brothers is a UK-based company specialising in the supply and haulage of aggregates. Operating across the North West for over 80 years, the company offers services including site preparation and freight transport by road. Fox Brothers has significantly enhanced its safety protocols by adopting Samsara’s AI Dash Cams and Vehicle Telematics allowing them to switch from a reactive approach following accidents, to having the ability to intervene and potentially prevent accidents from even happening. This transition has resulted in substantial improvements, including an 86% reduction in mobile device use while driving, a 91% reduction in seatbelt violations, and a 78% decrease in the risk of on-road collisions. Additionally, the company achieved a £200,000 savings in insurance claims due to fewer safety incidents.

“Samsara’s AI technology was a big differentiator for us. It allowed us to switch from a reactive approach following accidents, to having the ability to intervene and potentially prevent accidents from even happening,” said Andrew Latchum, Insurance Manager at Fox Brothers.

AI-powered training means you can improve driver behavior without additional resources: FM Conway, is an infrastructure services provider and one of the leading manufacturers of asphalt in the South East of England. The company implemented Samsara's AI technology across its fleet to improve driver safety. By installing Dual-Facing AI Dash Cams and Vehicle Gateway hubs, FM Conway gained real-time insights into driver behaviour, including speeding, harsh braking, and distracted driving. With Samsara, FM Conway reduced its number of road accidents by nearly 22% and cut moderate speeding by 80% in one year.

“We needed to know what's going on and what’s causing the main safety issues. Samsara is a system that looks at this, tells us what’s going on, and allows us to train drivers accordingly,” said Dave Boorman, Fleet Telematics Manager at FM Conway.

Real-time visibility means you can streamline operations and drive efficiency: Garandeau Group, a leader in delivery logistics based in France, implemented the Samsara Connected Operations Platform to fully digitise its delivery processes, transitioning from manual, paper-based workflows. With real-time geolocation and comprehensive visibility into vehicle movements, Garandeau Group can now make data-driven decisions that improve efficiency. The platform also enabled the automation of driver data management, saving an estimated 100 hours annually. Additionally, by using Samsara's onboard cameras, Garandeau enhanced driver safety and could quickly exonerate drivers in not-at-fault accidents, while on track to save €20,000 annually through the dematerialisation of delivery notes.

'Our partnership with Samsara is a long-term one, thanks to tools that are constantly evolving and that regularly offer us new functions, but also thanks to their genuine availability and great responsiveness whenever we need them,' said Tanguy Chauviere Le Drian, Managing Director of the Garandeau Group.

Consolidated road and job site visibility means you can remotely manage and improve safety: The Rasmussen Group comprises 10 operating companies supporting diverse construction and heavy equipment functions, including heavy haul, concrete production, dump truck operations, asphalt paving, and gravel production. Samsara Site Visibility allows Rasmussen to remotely monitor job sites, saving time and providing insights into site activities and hazards. They also deployed Samsara AI Dash Cams to improve safety with in-cab alerts and exonerate drivers with on-demand video retrieval. As a result, Rasmussen has decreased mobile usage while driving by 90%, speeding and running stop signs by 70%, and backup incidents by 25%.

“Our drivers operate in high-risk, unpredictable environments. That’s why it’s so important to change behaviour in the moment. The AI technology powering in-cab alerts helps us proactively improve driver awareness and safety.” Tim Janssen, Chief Operations Officer at Rasmussen.

Discreet asset tracking means you can track any piece of equipment and easily deter theft:

Cable East is a telecommunications construction company in northeast Georgia with over 400 assets. Using Samsara Asset Tracking and geofences to automatically track their equipment, Cable East receives alerts when any asset leaves approved areas. This automated approach to asset tracking saves the back office team time, streamlines the monitoring of expensive equipment, and enables fast recovery when theft occurs. Over the course of four years, Cable East recovered $2.5 million worth of assets, which would have been permanently lost without Samsara.

“I can physically put my hands on $2.5 million in assets that we never would have seen again without Samsara. These recoveries were a direct result of the enhanced visibility and monitoring capabilities provided by Samsara.” Billy Porter, Director of Risk Management at Cable East.

Real-time diagnostics mean you can take your maintenance programme from reactive to proactive:  Sterling Crane Canada—a division of Marmon Crane Services, the 10th-largest mobile crane rental company in the world—has operated in Canada for 70 years. By monitoring their vehicle and equipment health with Samsara, they saved over $517K in annual maintenance costs and more than 10K hours annually in technicians’ time. They also significantly reduced maintenance and repair spending, with estimated overall savings of more than $3M across their road and off-road units. By efficiently maintaining their equipment, they also extend asset lifespans, ensure reliability, and save millions in replacement costs.

“With Samsara, our maintenance process is more efficient. We've improved the reliability of our equipment, which in turn improves our reputation with our clients.” Mark Pisani, Vice President of Operations at Sterling Crane Canada.

AI overlay means you can make any site camera a smart camera: A full-service oil and gas contractor, Delta Constructors has 12 permanent sites and hundreds of vehicles and assets across Alaska, North Dakota, and other southern states. With Site Visibility, they brought their existing, third-party cameras onto Samsara, gaining access to AI overlay and intelligent search to quickly identify safety and security incidents. Now, they proactively monitor all aspects of their operations in the same location they manage their assets and vehicles in.

“With Samsara, we can manage infrastructure, fleet, and sites all from a single pane of glass: One application can view the whole company across three regions. I can be everywhere at one time, especially when working remotely.” Aaron Schilling, Director of IT at Delta Constructors.

Accurate fuel insights mean you can cut waste by training drivers on more efficient habits: Primoris Services Corporation provides a range of critical infrastructure services to the utility, energy, and renewables markets throughout the United States and Canada. With an expansive operation of over 8,000 vehicles and 25,000 assets, Primoris implemented Samsara Vehicle Telematics and AI Dash Cams for real-time visibility, streamlined fleet management, and to improve fuel efficiency. Insights into fuel usage and driver efficiency enable Primoris to identify opportunities for improvement and coach drivers on fuel-efficient driving habits. As a result, Primoris estimates they will save $2M annually in fuel costs.

Idling and routing data means you can improve efficiency to save on fuel spend: Amerivet Contracting is one of the fastest-growing disabled veteran, minority-owned companies in California. With Samsara Vehicle Gateways installed across their entire fleet, they no longer have to worry about tracking down equipment or wasting time in the process. This has allowed them to more easily scale the business and add new equipment without increased logistics. Samsara’s fuel reporting enabled them to save approximately $5,000 per month on fuel costs due to increased efficiency in driver routes and idling. Amerivet also uses Samsara’s integrations with WEX fuel cards to safeguard against fuel theft.
