Andrew Sharp is the Transport Shift Manager for Delifresh, a leading food distribution company supplying the UK catering and hospitality industry with fresh ingredients sourced directly from producers. With around 150 drivers carrying out 1,500 deliveries a day, operational efficiency is key. But the business also relies on real-time data to keep deliveries on track, customers satisfied, and drivers safe.

How long have you been using Samsara?

I’ve been using Samsara for a couple of years now. When I joined the business in April 2024, Delifresh was already using Samsara’s Connected Operations Platform extensively in areas such as vehicle telematics, basic driver oversight, and proof of delivery. But I wanted to know more. I wanted to understand how Samsara’s capabilities could further elevate our safety and compliance within the business. My goal – right from day one – was to find out how we could leverage Samsara's capabilities to elevate our safety, compliance, and operational efficiency.

As the Transport Shift Manager, what are your top priorities?

We work in a fast-moving sector so operational efficiency is key. My top priorities are keeping our drivers safe, ensuring our fleet is well maintained, meeting all regulatory requirements, and continuously improving our operations to provide the best possible service to our customers.

For instance, Samsara gives us live access to – and communication with – all of our drivers. If there’s a safety event, the Samsara platform alerts us and allows us to intervene and support our drivers – not only in the moment but also long term, through coaching, and the Connected Training app.

It’s also essential for our proof of delivery, providing us with up-to-date information about what deliveries have been made to a customer and when. In the event that a shipment is queried, we use this information either as proof of delivery or to arrange re-deliveries if necessary.

You’ve just mentioned Samsara’s Connected Training app – how do you use this to develop a comprehensive safety programme?

As a business, we’ve created a 2025 Transport Mission Statement themed around the idea that ‘Self Awareness Could Save a Life’. A key part of this involves training and coaching to create a positive safety culture.

Thanks to the Connected Training app, we've been able to back it up with tangible, proactive education, and support for our drivers. We’ve already set up over 50 training courses and we've been staggered by how easy it is to set up and use. This also connects directly with our Safety Inbox and the coaching element of the platform. In terms of providing a comprehensive safety platform, it ticks all the boxes and joins the dots.

What is your favourite Samsara feature?

It has to be the Drowsiness Detection Alert. Thanks to the coaching with our drivers, it's become clear that many didn’t realise how tired they were. In one case, a driver was nodding off and the forward-facing camera picked up standing traffic ahead. Without the alert that woke him in time, he would have run into those vehicles.

For me, Samsara’s Drowsiness Detection feature provides real-time active coaching. I truly believe it helps save lives.

How important are the regular Samsara User Groups (SUGs) that provide a forum to share ideas and insights?

The SUGs are a great way to hear about what other Samsara users are doing with the platform. Attending the SUGs has opened my eyes to the full breadth of Samsara's capabilities – from advanced safety features to powerful reporting and analytics.

It was a similar story when I attended the Go Beyond event in November 2024. When I spoke to my colleague the next day the first word that left my mouth was, “Wow!” because it was only then that I realised that we were only scratching the surface.

As a result, it’s prompted further collaboration with Samsara helping us to enhance our commitment to our drivers, their training, coaching, and their support. Both of these are key to our driver and business safety and success.

Clearly, you’re using the Samsara platform to make a difference. Do you have any tips you’d like to share with those just starting their Samsara journey?

It’s really important that you get driver buy-in right from the start. Driver-facing cameras can be a hard sell – so make sure you talk about the benefits. Make it as human and as personalised as possible.

We’ve had a handful of cases in the last 12 months where the cameras have proven the innocence of our drivers after an incident. It’s allowed us to prove that allegations from third parties were false. Without this proof, they may have faced a disciplinary hearing or worse. Our drivers may have initially been sceptical, but the cameras exonerated them. And that’s invaluable.

As I said at the beginning, my goal is to leverage Samsara's capabilities to elevate our safety, compliance, and operational efficiency. And that’s what we’re doing.
