Samsara’s Connected Operations Platform – created to make physical operations safer, more efficient and more sustainable – has the potential to deliver more than US$2 million (£1.6m) in benefits per customer each year.

That’s according to a report commissioned by Samsara and conducted by IDC, which found that by using data to drive efficiency and reduce costs, firms could realise an impressive 815% return on investment (ROI).

The report – The Business Value of Samsara published in 2024 – found that organisations could make “substantial direct cost savings” by using Samsara’s platform to lower spending on fuel, maintenance, and insurance while improving safety and driving efficiency across the board.

The survey of 130 Samsara customers – each with an average of 1,755 employees – assessed the value to each organisation using Samsara’s technology to run and manage their operations.

It found that businesses that relied on data to run their operations delivered:

  • 14% less vehicle time spent idling

  • 4% lower fuel costs

  • 9% lower vehicle maintenance costs

  • 10% longer vehicle life span

One organisation quoted in the report said: “It is hard to put a number on the value of Samsara, but it has opened up a whole new world for us. When we are talking about services in the tens of thousands of dollars per hour per crew, every minute of efficiency gained is significant. As a result of our systems with Samsara, we are now able to operate near-optimal efficiencies. Samsara is our most utilised company-wide business system and is responsible for millions in savings in our bottom line.”

While that contributor remained anonymous, there are plenty of operations prepared to go on the record to explain the impact Samsara has made.

AO – one of the UK’s largest electrical retailers serving millions of customers each year – has a fleet of more than 1,000 commercial vehicles. Thanks to its partnership with Samsara, it has recorded fewer monthly accidents, resulting in:

  • 16% cost savings in one year

  • 25% cut in insurance premiums

  • 31% reduction in related maintenance costs

  • Driven a multi-million-pound saving

“The raw cost-savings have been transformative,” said Shaun Carter, Regional Manager, AO. “It’s not all about money though. Safer drivers mean fewer accidents, more reliable deliveries, and ultimately, happier customers.”

Lanes Group – the UK’s largest independent drainage specialist in the UK – wanted to double down on safety and reduce the number of road incidents. Not only did it want a smart solution that would help drivers improve their behaviour, but one that would provide insights to inform driver safety coaching.

Since installing Samsara, Lanes Group has seen a reduction in the frequency and severity of incidents, which has helped it lower its premiums and reduce the average cost of each claim by £1,000 — generating an annual insurance saving overall of £250K per year.

“We’ve seen a huge drop in the number of at-fault claims, and a significant improvement in our ability to defend non-fault claims,” said Andrew Brierley, Managing Director at Lanes Group.

“The data speaks for itself: In the same 6-month period from the previous year, our payouts have dropped by £125,000. And, a significant number of would-be 50/50 claims, are now classed as non-fault claims.”

And thanks to Samsara, Lanes Group has been able to automate many of the manual processes across its operation saving £60,000 in annual workflow costs.

Reynolds Logistics – a logistics company with over 400 drivers and 180 tankers across the UK and Ireland – saves around £250,000 a year thanks to Samsara’s connected operations platform. By binning paperwork in favour of digital processes, the firm has reduced payroll queries by 85%, cut invoice queries by 93% and seen a 90% fall in manual data entry.

“Samsara has transformed our payroll process,” said Fergal O'Beirne, Chief Financial Officer at Reynolds Group. “The long hours and wasted resources we had in place to manually input timesheets have become a thing of the past,” he said.

As well as streamlining its business operations and saving around £250,000 a year in administrative budget, the company has also gained a level of oversight that was previously unattainable. Any issues, errors, or inconsistencies can now be identified and addressed swiftly, without navigating multiple systems.

Primarily based in and around London, essential infrastructure provider, FM Conway, has a fleet that covers more than 16 million miles a year. With a laser-like focus on safety, it’s seen a 22% reduction in the number of road accidents that translates into overall P&L savings of £212,000 including £155,000 of savings on third-party insurance claims.

Arte Logistik – a logistics company based in Germany that clocks up around nine million kilometres each year  – saves some €92,800 worth of fuel per year with the help of Samsara.

“With the help of Samsara, we have reduced the fuel consumption of the entire fleet by about 0.69 litres per 100 km,” said Julian Gumz, Operations Fleet Control Center, Arte Logistik. “With an annual mileage of about nine million kilometres, this translates into a substantial fuel saving of around 64,000 litres or €92,800 per year,” he said.

It also notched up a 50% decrease in safety events within a year, despite an increase in the fleet size by 15%. It’s also been able to reduce its claims rate through preventive accident avoidance while mounting evidence-backed defences against unjustified claims.

Scharf Busreisen – a coach business based in Germany which also operates in neighbouring countries such as Austria, France and Italy – invested in Samsara’s connected operations platform to maximise the efficiency and safety of its growing fleet.

As well as improvements across the company, it’s seen significant savings on major accidents – savings of up to €20,000 per accident – which have significantly reduced the company's overall costs.

These examples – which only scratch the surface – underscore how data is reshaping physical operations across industries. From reducing costs and enhancing operational efficiency – to saving fuel and making operations safer – Samsara delivers measurable value to operations at scale.

Whether it’s unlocking millions in savings, streamlining processes, or supporting ambitious environmental goals, Samsara empowers organisations to thrive in an increasingly data-driven world.
