Navigating growing pains with limited visibility

How do you manage a rapidly expanding fleet when your existing systems are struggling to keep up? This was the challenge facing Liberty, a leading property services organisation in the UK. In just a few years, their fleet had more than doubled from 400 to almost 1,000 vehicles, outgrowing their previous telematics solution.

"Our old software wasn't compatible or functioning well," said Sam Greenwood, Head of Fleet Management at Liberty. "It was purely a track and trace system which we could only use reactively.”

This reactive approach was taking its toll. Accident claims often resulted in 50/50 fault decisions due to lack of evidence, and reporting frequently exceeded the crucial 24-hour window. Liberty had equally limited visibility into driver behaviour and vehicle performance, making it challenging to implement effective safety measures.

A lack of data also made it harder for Liberty to reach its ambitious sustainability targets around transitioning its fleet to electric vehicles. The business found itself in urgent need of a solution that could help navigate this period of growth – all while prioritising safety, efficiency, and sustainability.

Connecting the dots for smarter operations

Liberty partnered with Samsara to implement a comprehensive fleet management solution. The collaboration saw Vehicle Gateways installed across the entire fleet of commercial vehicles, and AI Dash Cams rolled out to 85% of vehicles for greater visibility into driver and vehicle performance.

"Samsara is a one-stop shop," said Sam. "Being able to integrate dash cams with our existing tracking system is a huge benefit." The integrated solution now provides real-time safety alerts, driver scoring, and crucial video evidence for quick and fair accident resolution.

Despite coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation process was seamless. "We managed to roll it out over 5 months," said Sam. "That was down to the ease and simplicity of Samsara’s technology for migration."

The Samsara Platform not only provided the insight for better fleet management, but also underlined the importance of operational performance within Liberty. "Now, with the data and visibility Samsara provides, fleet operations is a top agenda point in every monthly meeting with regional directors," said Sam.

Real-time data and analytics informed decision-making around EV adoption, while the user-friendly interface ensured easy access and use across different departments to keep operations running smoothly.

Driving safety, efficiency, and sustainability to new heights

Integrating Samsara’s solutions has yielded impressive results across multiple fronts for Liberty. Safety improvements have been dramatic, with a 60% decrease in tailgating events and an increase in the average safety score to 83% across the company.

Accident management has also become significantly more efficient: Liberty now sits within the fastest 5% of claim reporters with its insurer, thanks to the ability to provide clear video evidence and respond proactively to incidents. With reduced ambiguity around accidents, the business is now able to exonerate drivers in the event of 50/50 claims.

The impact of Samsara extends beyond safety and efficiency. Vehicle utilisation data has informed Liberty’s sustainability efforts, enabling the business to transition 10% of its fleet to electric vehicles already.

What’s next for Liberty?

Liberty plans to expand its Samsara partnership in the future, aiming to implement Dual-facing Dash Cams for more granular driver coaching, and to roll out the Samsara Driver App for real-time feedback.

With insights from Samsara to support decision-making, Liberty is well-equipped to progress fleet electrification and continue setting new standards in sustainability for the property services industry.
