Headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, Sterling Crane Canada rents, supplies, and services mobile hydraulic cranes across the country, employing just over 600 people.
With equipment distributed across Canada and hundreds of job sites active at any given time, they face unique operational challenges. This includes efficiently tracking and maintaining cranes in remote areas, ensuring timely repairs and optimal deployment to minimize downtime, and keeping their mobile cranes road-safe given Canada’s wide-ranging terrain and difficult winters.
Their previous provider was unreliable and had difficulty connecting with their equipment, resulting in inaccurate data and reporting. This, along with the introduction of the Canadian Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate and phasing out of 3G networks, led Sterling Crane Canada to seek a more reliable and advanced technology partner.

With their previous provider, Sterling Crane Canada had trouble tracking and locating many of their assets due to spotty GPS coverage and limited reporting. Samsara’s data and reporting has also supported Sterling Crane Canada’s goal of achieving 80% planned and 20% unplanned maintenance, which ensures they are using all of their equipment to its full potential. Since implementing Samsara they have gone from 66% planned and 34% unplanned maintenance to reaching their 80/20 goal, a 14% improvement. “With Samsara, our maintenance process is more efficient. We've improved the reliability of our equipment, which in turn improves our reputation with our clients,” said Mark Pisani, VP of Operations.

This has helped improve asset utilization by 8% across branches to 74% and made certain that their customers get the equipment they need, exactly when and where they need it.

Due to accurate and reliable data, Sterling Crane Canada has improved their proactive maintenance by 14%, from 34% to 20% unplanned maintenance, while saving over $517,000 in annual maintenance labor costs and 10,000+ hours in technicians’ time. Prior to Samsara, inspection notifications were often missed due to the lack of automatic reporting in a single location or incomplete information. Now, when inspections take place anywhere in Canada, the compliance team is immediately notified of the inspection score and how well the equipment passed or not, with pictures and reports included for more detailed reviews. This has allowed Sterling Crane Canada to consolidate all the necessary inspection information into their maintenance work orders, providing a single, accurate view.

We're excited to implement even more soon,” said Goodridge.

By doing so, their goal is to reduce the time spent searching for high-value assets and cut down on unnecessary spending for rigging equipment, a time-consuming and costly challenge for Sterling Crane.
For example, if an item is required in Toronto but located in Alberta or British Columbia, Asset Tag will enable quick identification and tracking of inventory, improving inventory management while also minimizing delays. “We’re excited to be more efficient with where our gear is and gain more visibility so that we place items or components in certain hotspots, or logistically easy areas to access,” said Goodridge.
