Road Commission of Kalamazoo County saved $60K with single, unified platform
The Samsara Connected Operations™ Cloud unlocked complete visibility across their fleet and facilities within a single platform—transforming the efficiency and safety of their operations while empowering their employees.
Learn more about the Road Commission
Manual workflows and limited visibility cost time and money.
The Road Commission of Kalamazoo County (RCKC) is responsible for maintaining more than 1,200 miles of road in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. They oversee all of the equipment, vehicles, and facilities required to maintain 63 bridges, more than 27,000 road signs, and dozens of traffic signals across the county. With work ranging from road maintenance to asset management, township relations, and safety service requests, their personnel are dedicated to public service—and they are committed to maximizing taxpayer dollars through efficient and safe operations.
Before Samsara, the RCKC had a legacy GPS provider, but it was unreliable and limited in its functionality. Because their team relied on paper-based workflows for driver vehicle inspection reports (DVIRs), equipment maintenance was reactive, often leading to unexpected downtime and costly repairs. In need of a more efficient way to manage their expansive operations, they sought a technology partner that could uplevel their operations from end to end, to empower their personnel and the community they serve.
Samsara connects their operations from fleet to facilities.
With the Samsara Connected Operations Cloud, the RCKC connected their operations from end to end—gaining complete visibility across their fleet and facilities within a single platform. As a result, they empowered their employees to operate more safely and efficiently.
Paperless DVIRs streamline maintenance, saving 15 hours monthly.
Samsara’s Vehicle Telematics and Equipment Monitoring solutions have been game-changers for the RCKC, transforming their maintenance from reactive to proactive. With paperless DVIRs and real-time alerts for maintenance issues, they eliminated a 1-2 day lag in back-office processing, saving approximately 15 hours per month.
LEARN MOREPaperless DVIRs in the Samsara Driver App and real-time fault code alerts make it possible to dispatch mechanics proactively with the proper tools and equipment to perform maintenance on the road, instead of waiting multiple days for vehicles to return or making several trips into the field. As a result, their mechanics can address issues before they become more serious problems. This has helped the RCKC prevent downtime and avoid the higher costs associated with emergency repairs, saving taxpayer dollars while freeing up time for their personnel to do more meaningful work.
AI Dash Cams exonerate, protect, and empower their personnel.
Though RCKC operators were initially hesitant about having dash cams in their vehicles, they quickly saw the benefits. Since implementation, they have exonerated 6 drivers from not-at-fault incidents, saving thousands in taxpayer dollars due to avoided claims while empowering their operators to focus on what matters most: service and safety.
LEARN MOREHow the RCKC is protecting & empowering their operators.
Shortly after deploying Samsara’s Video-Based Safety solution, RCKC operators who had set up a routine lane closure to perform road maintenance activities witnessed a civilian vehicle dangerously disobey their traffic regulators, ignoring commands to stop the vehicle. They were able to quickly and easily retrieve footage from multiple Samsara AI Dash Cams installed in RCKC trucks at the scene and share the footage with the authorities, who identified the civilian via their license plate and issued them a citation, helping protect the RCKC operators. Sharing this footage at their safety meeting illustrated the value of the dash cams, and driver buy-in quickly followed.
Now, the RCKC relies on Samsara AI Dash Cams to coach drivers on safe habits, reducing risky behaviors such as speeding, rolling through stops, and harsh braking while encouraging friendly competition with Driver Safety Scores. They even use the dash cams to assess potential hazards remotely, so they can determine what PPE is required to complete a job without a driver having to step out of a vehicle into a potentially dangerous situation. As a result, their operators feel protected and empowered by Samsara.
Site Visibility consolidates data from fleet and facilities on one platform.
In need of video security for a new facility they were constructing, the RCKC realized they could gain real-time visibility across both their fleet and facilities within a single platform by deploying Samsara’s Site Visibility solution. As a result, they have increased the efficiency, safety, and security of their facility operations without adding any additional vendors.
LEARN MOREHow the RCKC increased the efficiency, safety, and security of their facility operations.
The RCKC deployed Site Visibility to monitor the front entrance, gate, parking lot, and truck scales at a new facility, helping prevent trespassing and theft. Artificial intelligence (AI) makes it possible for the RCKC to receive real-time alerts when motion is detected in restricted areas after working hours. Shortly after deploying the cameras, they received a motion alert via the Samsara Sites App during a weekend when there shouldn’t have been anyone onsite. As a result, they were able to immediately contact the authorities and give an accurate description of the trespasser as well as their vehicle make and model, assisting the authorities in locating the individual.
Inside their stock and inventory rooms, Site Visibility captures which supplies employees take during emergencies, when they don’t have time to manually “check out” supplies via their inventory system. When this happens, the RCKC can easily see who entered the room and at what time via their Samsara Dashboard. This has increased the accuracy of their inventory while empowering employees to work quickly.
An empowered team operating more efficiently and safely.
The RCKC realized immediate cost savings of nearly $60,000 by switching to Samsara, and the ROI of the partnership continues to grow. Since implementation, they have exonerated 6 drivers from not-at-fault incidents, saving thousands in taxpayer dollars due to avoided claims. By transforming their DVIR process from manual to paperless, they eliminated a 1-2 day lag in back-office processing, saving approximately 15 hours per month of their team’s time due to Samsara’s ease-of-use. Now, they can refocus that time on their top priority: serving the community.
