Empyre Builders optimizes asset utilization with Equipment Monitoring

“Samsara is definitely worth the investment to protect your assets and make sure they’re well-maintained.”

Rob Young, Fleet Manager, Empyre Builders

Empyre Builders, a construction company based in Lehi, Utah, uses Samsara to track and protect equipment, and increase efficiency across its operations.

Highlights:

  • 17 AG24 asset gateways and 2 vehicle gateways provide live visibility into extendable boom telehandlers, a semi truck, and a dump truck.

  • Geofence alerts generate real-time warnings about unexpected movement and unauthorized use.

  • Real-time asset tracking provides equipment locations across job sites and enables efficient dispatch of machine fuel, lube, and maintenance.

  • Scheduling preventative maintenance based on engine hours streamlines upkeep, reducing downtime and prolonging asset lifespan.

Empyre Builders chose Samsara’s integrated platform to protect their equipment from theft and gain end-to-end visibility. After a neighboring business had a Cat Skid Loader stolen in broad daylight, Empyre Builders decided they needed a solution to protect their own equipment. “Because most machines use a single universal key,” explained Young, Empyre’s fleet manager, “these machines are easily stolen, repainted, and sold.” Now Samsara’s live GPS tracking and geofence alerts give Empyre the confidence that their assets are protected.

In addition to preventing theft, Empyre Builders leverages Samsara to simplify daily operations and increase productivity. Real-time GPS tracking with the AG24 gives Young the precise location of each of his assets. Before Samsara, he used a spreadsheet to track equipment, but now his dashboard makes it easy to instantly find any asset and confirm that it’s where it needs to be. Additionally, by tracking engine hour usage data, Young can monitor asset utilization and reallocate equipment to other job sites to cut down on dormant hours.

“For my crew to be able to get started, I need to locate a machine, get it picked up, and bring it to the jobsite,” Young said. “I cover 2–3 counties with different machines, and my Samsara dashboard gives me a visual of where everything is. Samsara keeps my crew productive.”

Empyre Builders has also used Samsara to upgrade their maintenance program. They now schedule preventative maintenance based on engine hours, improving machine health, decreasing downtime, and increasing maintenance dispatch efficiency. “It’s great to be able to see which machines need fuel, lube, or maintenance remotely,” said Young. “Sending someone out to fuel and lube a machine with only 2 hours of runtime on it is a wasted trip.” Now Empyre’s maintenance program is more efficient than ever. “Samsara is definitely worth the investment to protect your assets and make sure they’re well-maintained.”
