Senior Director, DEI
Innovation is at the heart of how we serve our customers at Samsara. And we know that the best ideas can come from anywhere and that inviting new perspectives and welcoming differences is fundamental to innovation. This is why “be inclusive” is one of our core values. It’s also why we track and transparently report on our progress across multiple dimensions of inclusion, including our company demographics and programmatic inclusion efforts.
Today, we are excited to share the third edition of Samsara’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) report. This report provides an in-depth look at our company’s demographic data and programmatic inclusion efforts as we continue increasing representation and creating a more inclusive work environment. We are proud of the progress we’ve made and transparent about the areas of opportunity we still have.
Data is the lifeblood of Samsara, and DEI data is essential to ensuring we can assess, track, and improve diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our goal was to accelerate growth, retention, and innovation through representation and inclusion. Here are the key results from 2023:
Increased gender representation overall. Women as a percentage of total employees increased by 1.1%, and women in leadership roles increased by 3.6% from 2022. Gains extended to women in underrepresented categories as well.
Improved our representation of Black employees in tech roles. Partnerships with several universities and investing in underrepresented communities have contributed to these gains.
Growth in our Latinx community in the U.S. We’ve grown our Latinx population year after year with almost a 2% increase in the last two years.
In 2023, we focused our DEI strategy on the areas we believe have the greatest impact in making Samsara a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive company—helping us solve immediate challenges while building for the long term.
Increase Representation: We invested in partnerships with universities and professional communities, internal and external executive talent pipelining, and inclusive job postings and interview practices. This was done in parallel with proactive internal education initiatives and data tracking at all levels.
Engage Internal and External Communities: Internally, we expanded our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to include our new Veterans ERG and expanded our DEI Steering Committee. Externally, Samsara for Good, Samsara’s giving arm, participated in over 25 events and tracked over 1,148 hours with over 427 employee volunteers—living our core values as we aim to uplift our local communities.
Expand on Development Programs: This year, we launched a new Women in R&D Development Program, scaled our company-wide mentorship program, and leveled up DEI education and programming. We also continued to create education opportunities for our leadership team to understand that intentionality in DEI leads to increased innovation, better business outcomes, and increased workplace effectiveness.
We remain focused on building an inclusive culture that appreciates and respects differences—creating a sense of belonging for all employees. The unique perspectives and experiences of all our team members are key to our ability to innovate, grow, and evolve as we face the complex global problems ahead.
We continuously propose, review, and revise policies and goals and further embed DEI data into business and people processes to uplevel our DEI efforts as we drive improvements and greater accountability across all departments, initiatives, and activities. We have more work to do this year, and as we near our 2025 DEI goals, our next step is to develop the next generation of company-wide goals beyond 2025.
