Werner® achieved a 19-year low in DOT reportable accidents with AI Dash Cams
With Samsara, this transportation and logistics company has improved safety for their team of 8,000+ drivers and found a technology partner invested in innovation based on customer feedback.
Meet Werner Enterprises
In need of consistent visibility into their 8,000-vehicle fleet.
Werner Enterprises is a truckload transportation and logistics company operating across North America. With a history spanning 68 years, Werner organically grew from a one-truck operation to a $3.3 billion company with nearly 8,000 vehicles and more than 30,000 trailers. Driving a collective three million miles every day means Werner’s drivers encounter every road challenge imaginable and must be hyper-vigilant to protect themselves and the motoring public.
As part of Werner’s skills enhancement program, every flagged video is reviewed for both opportunities to celebrate their drivers and provide continuous feedback. Before Samsara, Werner used a dash cam system that only recorded certain events, for a short period of time. The inability to capture all events for longer periods of time made understanding the full scenario challenging.
A technology partnership rooted in customer feedback.
When first introduced to Samsara’s forward-facing AI Dash Cams, Werner conducted a small but powerful pilot of just two dash cams installed in the vehicles of their CIO and CTO. After experiencing the ability to instantly review safety events with continuous HD footage, Werner implemented a full fleet dash cam rollout and made it standard procedure to equip new trucks with AI Dash Cams. With such a large-scale deployment, manually reviewing all videos coming through Samsara was not possible, so Werner worked with Samsara to automate a portion of their video review, enabling them to focus on the opportunity. Working closely with Samsara proved invaluable to Werner during the installation process and they maintain an open dialogue with Samsara leadership for continuous feedback.
Achieved a 19-year low in DOT reportable accidents with AI Dash Cams.
Since implementing Samsara AI Dash Cams across their entire fleet, Werner experienced safety improvements across the board, notably bringing down their accident rate by 22% in 2023 with a 19-year low in DOT reportable accidents. Werner has built an incredible safety program augmented by Samsara technology by prioritizing in-person coaching using Samsara Dash Cam footage. Werner also saw a 20% decrease in harsh braking and a 50% decrease in harsh turns, ultimately contributing to their accident rate reduction.
Their drivers’ commitment to safety makes these accomplishments possible and Werner has an extensive Driver Recognition Program to celebrate their drivers and bolster retention. “Safety is ingrained in our culture at Werner. For recognition at the most basic level, we call and thank each driver every time we get a video of them doing something exceptional, like preventing or responding to an accident,” Jaime Hamm, Vice President of Safety and Compliance. A huge draw of driving for Werner is their Million Mile program—when a driver completes one million miles without a preventable accident, Werner customizes the truck of that driver’s choice (along with other perks). Achieving this status takes about 10 years and a remarkable 70% of Werner’s 2,200+ Million Mile members started as first-time drivers with the company. Werner is proud to offer robust coaching and meaningful benefits to promote this level of retention and help each driver achieve a million miles.
Change can be hard, especially in trucking, so Werner practices in-person change management and training. When a driver gets assigned to their first truck, an associate (often a former driver) familiarizes them on the technology in the truck and the related safety expectations. This peer-to-peer relationship helps ease new drivers into the role and lays the foundation for long-term success. Moreover, by equipping their trucks with the most advanced camera technology, Werner is investing in each driver’s well-being and development within the company.
