Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! An annual celebration from September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month honors the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latinx Americans in the United States.
This year, Samsara’s Latinx employee resource group (ERG) celebrated with a virtual “Keep Calm and Have a Cafecito” event, as well as weekly facts about the Latinx community shared in Samsara’s Latinx community and allies Slack channel.
Read on to meet a few members of Samsara’s Latinx ERG and hear how they’re celebrating this Hispanic Heritage Month.

How do you celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month?
In my family, it’s a big tradition to spend time together. We start the day early—preparing lots of food—and then sit at the table for hours eating and remembering our good times together (hopefully, the pandemic will let us do this again soon!). I have a great admiration for the parents, grandparents, and beyond who keep our traditions alive and keep family as the foundation of our society.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? Why is it important?
For me, this month is an opportunity to share my traditions and culture with friends from other communities, as well as an opportunity for me to get back to my roots. It's very important for me to stay connected with my Latin heritage while being away from home. I don't have my family here with me, so I rely on my Hispanic and Latinx friends—we get together as much as possible and enjoy music and food from all our countries!

Who is a Hispanic and/or Latinx hero you admire?
Gabriela Mistral is one of my Latin heroes. She is a Chilean poet who was the first Latin American woman to win the Nobel Prize. Her poetry inspired and was the voice of many idealistic aspirations of the entire Latin American world. She defended the rights of children, women, and the poor while advocating for the freedom of democracy, and she was able to do all of this using only words.

How do you celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month?
My identity as a Latina is something that is so ingrained in my life—my heritage is a celebration every day, not just during Hispanic Heritage Month. I celebrate my culture through the music I listen to, the food I eat, and the way in which I speak. In terms of our traditions, my family and I always have Friday night dinner. After dinner, we always play Loteria (like Bingo). My family dinners usually consist of about 14 people, including my tios (uncles), tias (aunts), and primos (cousins)—so it gets very competitive very quickly! It's something my entire family looks forward to every week.
