Sterling Crane Canada saves $3M+ in equipment maintenance and replacement costs

Partnering with Samsara helped Sterling Crane Canada streamline their operations and bolster their maintenance program, saving millions of dollars.

Meet Sterling Crane Canada

Unplanned downtime and unreliable data cost time and money.

Sterling Crane Canada—a division of Marmon Crane Services, the 10th-largest mobile crane rental company in the world—has operated in Canada for 70 years. Headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, Sterling Crane Canada rents, supplies, and services mobile hydraulic cranes across the country, employing just over 600 people.

With equipment distributed across Canada and hundreds of job sites active at any given time, they face unique operational challenges. This includes efficiently tracking and maintaining cranes in remote areas, ensuring timely repairs and optimal deployment to minimize downtime, and keeping their mobile cranes road-safe given Canada’s wide-ranging terrain and difficult winters.

Their previous provider was unreliable and had difficulty connecting with their equipment, resulting in inaccurate data and reporting. This, along with the introduction of the Canadian Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate and phasing out of 3G networks, led Sterling Crane Canada to seek a more reliable and advanced technology partner.

Durable and reliable technology that’s built to scale.

Sterling Crane Canada needed a technology partner that would provide timely and accurate data while seamlessly scaling with their business. After hearing about Samsara from fellow industry professionals, they decided to make the switch after a successful trial provided immediate results. Implementing Samsara was quick. In just nine months 30 technicians completed 1,000 hardware installs across 15 branches. “We connected it to our vehicles, and everything worked,” said Marco Goodridge, Maintenance Lead. “We were up and running fast and immediately got positive feedback from our drivers. They loved it.”

With Samsara, Sterling Crane Canada has strengthened their proactive maintenance program, increased asset utilization, and enhanced driver safety and coaching, leading to significant productivity gains and millions of dollars saved. Technicians, operators, and drivers are able to focus on their core responsibilities, rather than time-consuming administrative and manual tasks, freeing up thousands of labor hours. These savings are being reinvested into their business and people through new equipment purchases, a driver rewards program, and more.

Improving proactive maintenance and identifying $3M+ in cost savings.

Due to accurate and reliable data, Sterling Crane Canada has improved their proactive maintenance by 14%, from 34% to 20% unplanned maintenance, while saving over $517,000 in annual maintenance labor costs and 10,000+ hours in technicians’ time. Technicians now focus on their core tasks instead of troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment or being incorrectly deployed for repairs. These newfound insights have also uncovered significant cost savings, including $1.1 million saved in maintenance and replacement costs overall for on-road equipment and over $2.1 million saved overall for off-road equipment.

PLATEFORME

Streamlined data and compliance with Samsara’s turnkey integrations.

Before switching to Samsara, Sterling Crane Canada was manually managing data from two separate GPS and ELD systems, leading to efficiency issues and impeding both their proactive maintenance program and compliance efforts. By using Samsara’s turnkey integrations to seamlessly share real-time data with their fleet management software, Sterling Crane Canada can now proactively identify equipment issues, reduce downtime, extend the lifespan of their assets, and ensure regulatory compliance.

BOÎTIER DE LOCALISATION

Improving utilization of unused assets across Canada.

Sterling Crane Canada is also planning to use the Samsara Asset Tag to take their operational efficiency to the next level by gaining visibility into the location of their auxiliary equipment. This is especially important during Canadian winters, where sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfall make it difficult for workers to find the equipment they need in the yard. The Asset Tag will reduce time spent searching for high-value assets, such as slings, shackles, bars, and boom sections, ensuring they are not lost and are allocated where they are needed most.
