Back in April, we shared our vision of what the future of work at Samsara would look like when we planned to have everyone in their “new normal” starting in January 2022. Our employees could be fully remote, full-time in the office, or “hybrid” (i.e., working two “core days” in the office and use the remaining three days of the week as “flex days” where they can work at home or in the office).
Since that time, we’ve learned a lot. We observed and listened to employee feedback about how they work best. Most of our people continued to work remotely, but we’ve had many come back to the office a couple of days out of the week. We saw that preferences were constantly shifting and changing based on what was happening around them.
Ultimately, we’ve learned that there is no “right way” to approach the future of work. Needs are so varied depending on timing, the team you’re on, and the individual. The only thing we can say definitively is that we will continue to experiment, learn, and evolve our approach based on employee feedback to provide greater flexibility.
With that in mind, we are evolving the future of work at Samsara to give individuals and teams the flexibility to decide for themselves where they want to work—whether that’s in the office or at home.
Our goal is to empower everyone to work in the way that best suits their needs so they can feel connected and productive, and make an impact for our customers and our company in the long term.
We will now be taking a new path forward. While we will still have some people who are fully remote and others who are full-time in the office, we are moving away from a “hybrid” way of working to a “flexible” way of working. That means we are eliminating what we called our required “core days” in the office at the company level. This gives individuals and teams the ability to make the call on when and how often to come into the office or work from home—based on what’s needed to collaborate and get things done.
To align with this more flexible way of working, we’ll make our offices more flexible too. Our offices will be available to everyone five days a week with all of our usual world-class, on-site support, which includes lunch and snacks. We will move to distinct “neighborhoods” grouped by teams or departments with agile seating. For those who regularly work in the office and need a desk, that can be arranged as well.
In addition, we are also rolling out a co-working space program for those who are more than 50 miles away from a Samsara office. For those working in the field, traveling, meeting with teammates to collaborate, holding a client meeting, or looking for a quiet dedicated work space, this coworking option will allow them physical spaces to do so.
This all starts now. We are giving every Samsarian the option to work with greater flexibility. And true to Samsara, we will continue to run a feedback loop—experimenting, learning, and iterating as needs continue to change. At the end of the day, it’s about making sure the future of work at Samsara works for everyone.
